By Shuttle
There are several companies that operate Hanoi – Ninh Binh routes such as Xelimousine:
The shuttles are clean and have Wi-Fi. This is the method used by Vietnamese travelers and therefore it is a good way to get to know each other.
For 150,000 vnd per person, they pick you up directly from your hotel or Hanoi airport and take you directly to their agency in Ninh Binh.
For 50,000 vnd more, they take you to your hotel.
I used them last July, no complaints.
By Bus
Buses take about 1.5 to 2 hours from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, depending on the type of bus and the route. Allow 2 hours to be safe.
From Hanoi, buses depart from Giap Bat (south) bus station. As soon as you arrive at the station, you are likely to be accosted by someone asking if you want to go to Ninh Binh.
Ninh Binh bus station is located near the train station, just across the bridge to Phat Diem, on the last section of Tran Hung Dao (Highway 1) heading south towards Hue.
Buses to all destinations are frequent and you will rarely have to wait long.
If you are not staying near the bus station, you can wait on the main road – Tran Hung Dao – and hail a bus. However, you will not get the best seat. And yes, first come, first served.
From Ninh Binh to Hanoi, most buses end at Giap Bat bus station in Hanoi, although some go to My Dinh, which is a bit far from Hoan Kiem Lake.
Fare in Hanoi ranges from 100,000 to 170,000VND depending on the range chosen.

By Private Car
You can rent a private car from Hanoi to Ninh Binh or from Halong Bay Maritime.
The current rate (January 2024) for a 4-seater car:

By Train
The new Ninh Binh train station (No. 1, 27/7 Street – Ninh Binh) is just behind the bus station. At least five trains a day go there, allow about 3 hours.
Hanoi train station is located at 120, Le Duan Street.
Fares in Hanoi range from 80,000 vnd to 150,000 vnd.
Fares vary depending on the class of trains and seats chosen.
You will arrive at Ninh Binh. To go to Tam Coc, you will have to take a taxi.

By Motorcycle
You can rent a motorbike from Hanoi to reach Ninh Binh, it will cost you approximately 150,000 vnd per day for the motorbike rental.
Allow 2 hours to go to Ninh Binh.
It’s a good way to enjoy the scenery on the road.

Getting around
Bicycles and motorbikes are available to hire from most hotels or B&Bs and the terrain is flat so not too strenuous.
Alternatively you can take a taxi to Tam Coc and from there walk to Bich Dong. Or rent a bike in Tam Coc.
To visit Trang An, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh Pagoda, you will need to go there by motorbike or take a taxi or motorbike taxi (Xe Om) between the places, as it is hard to do them on foot especially as some Monuments are located quite far from the place.
Otherwise, book a tour or reserve a private car with your hotel.
