The South Central Coast region has magnificent salt fields, attracting tourists.
The salt fields in Vietnam were once some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. The image of the salt people carrying the “gifts of the sea”, graceful footsteps reflecting on the salt fields fascinates nature lovers as well as photographers.
The Central Coast region is famous for its salt villages. The dry season every year, March to July is a good time to visit the salt fields.
Hon Khoi (Khanh Hoa)
Nature favors Khanh Hoa with a wide coastline, and the salt industry here is formed and thriving. The salt people of Hon Khoi, Ninh Hoa, are mainly women, who create huge salt “mountains” that stand out from the marine nature.
December to April is the ideal time to visit Hon Khoi. At any time of the day, you can experience the beauty of the salt fields from different angles.
In the morning, from afar, the salt fields stretch out like small peaks covered in smooth snow. When sunset falls, the salt field is like a giant mirror reflecting the sky dyed pink and purple, attracting photographers and romantic souls.
The salt making season usually begins in March and ends in September. On this occasion, visitors will discover the process of manual salt production in Ninh Hoa.
Phuong Cuu (Ninh Thuan)
About 15 km from Phan Rang – Thap Cham town, Phuong Cuu salt field belongs to Ninh Hai district, Ninh Thuan province. Not only bringing economic value, the salt field here also creates a different highlight among the vast nature.
Salt making season in Phuong Cuu starts from December to May next year. If they are lucky enough to come during the salt harvest, visitors will be able to enjoy a vivid image, mixing the sky, the sea and the small people.
A day of salt making of the Salt People begins early in the morning. The nicer the weather, the faster the salt crystallizes. It is the “wind like thunder and sun like roasting” of the coastal land of Ninh Thuan that contributes to the creation of giant salt granaries.
Ca Na (Ninh Thuan)
Ca Na is located in Thuan Nam district, Ninh Thuan province, about 30 km south of Phan Rang town – Thap Cham. Salt making in Ca Na has a history of over 100 years. This place is considered one of the largest salt warehouses in the country with an area of up to 1,000 hectares spread along the coast.
Salt people make salt from approximately December to the end of August of the lunar calendar, coinciding with the time of the annual dry season. Since around 2017, salt has been made on tarpaulin fields instead of land. Therefore, long-term crystallized salt gives better quality.
Ca Na salt seeds are popular with consumers due to their rich salty taste. The delicious Ca Na fish sauce is famous near and far, also partly thanks to this pure grain of salt.

Sa Huynh (Quang Ngai)
Sa Huynh salt deposit in Duc Tho district, Quang Ngai province, with an area of more than 110 hectares, is the place that generates a large amount of salt in the Central region. According to historians, the Sa Huynh salt field dates back to the 19th century. Salt making has long been considered a traditional craft village in Quang Ngai.
From early morning, the salt workers were present on the ground to carry out the salt manufacturing process. Depending on the rising tide, they carry water from canals and ditches into the fields. When the sun rises, the sea water gradually crystallizes into salt. To make the salt white, coarse and iridescent, saltwater farmers must dry the saltwater for 3 days before harvesting.
In early summer, the sea is a clear blue, the pure white salt fields sparkle in the sun, creating a scene that attracts visitors. Coming here, you will experience the process of salt making, feel the salty taste of the sea and the idyllic rhythm of life of the salt inhabitants of Sa Huynh….
